Many leukemia families come from rural areas outside Shanghai. They do not have any social medical insurance. With limited financial resources, this chronic disease has deprived them of their life savings. These families are forced to sell their homes, and borrow from friends & families only to leave them heavily indebted. In China, a leukemia patient needs to receive a 3 1/2 year treatment which includes an initial 4 month in hospital treatment and a 2 week in-hospital treatment every three to six months depending on the type of leukemia or other infections a child incurs. The medical costs quickly accumulate at approximately RMB 5,000 a week for chemotherapy. The total cost can run RMB 200,000 to RMB 300,000 to complete the entire 3 1/2 year treatment. Their financial need is daunting. The living conditions of these families are horrid. Parents have to sleep in a folding chair in the hospital on a RMB 10/night rate because apartment rentals in Shanghai are far from affordable. In an effort to offer more than hope for the leukemia kids and their families, we have established and raised funds to assist in their serious financial needs. But we must continue to raise funds to support these leukemia kids survival. The Xin Hua leukemia kids has since been renamed to Mercy Fund in honor of a Concordia student, Mercy, who was diagnosed in Shanghai and later died in the USA of the most difficult leukemia, Acute Myelogenous Leukemia or AML. One of the more difficult forms of leukemia to treat and survive. With the support of this wonderful and caring community in Shanghai, we can make a difference for many of these leukemia children.
