How You Can Help.....

Hospital VisitYou can help in many ways....

  • You can donate new or clean gently used Chinese books, games easily played while lying in bed and receiving treatment (AGES 2-12 YRS. OLD) , drawing/writing paper with crayons/pencils, Chinese dvd's, various toys (but NO stuffed animals or products as such due to the harboring of germs).
  • Most importantly, we are accepting daily hygiene toiletries (toothbrushes, soaps, shampoos, lotions, chapsticks, etc) for the children and their families staying in the hospital.
  • In the winter time, we are looking for hats, gloves and socks to donate to the children. On specal requests , we may need new or clean gently used clothes.
  • And, you can easily contribute by purchasing the Giving Card.

Financial Aid towards Medical treatment .....

A leukemia child needs to receive a three and half year treatment , which includes an initial four month in-hospital treatment and a two week in hospital treatment every three/six months after, depending on the type of leukemia the child has (ALL or AML). The costs for a two week treatment in hospital amounts to 5,000RMB. It costs between 200,000 to 300,000RMB to complete the entire three and half year treatment if no further infections or complications arise.

You may choose a specific child to sponsor, otherwise the money will go to the family in the worst financial need. The money is directly transferred to the hospital's account to pay the bills in the name of the child. The nurse in charge will monitor the expenditures and collect receipts issued by the hospital. The donor can have all the receipts from the hospital or a receipt from JGI-Shanghai.

Financial Aid towards local housing ...

This chronic disease has deprived many of them of their life savings, and leaves them heavily indebted. The leukemia children and their family need our help further towards local housing support while in out-patient care. Apartment rentals in Shanghai are far from affordable. Many have to stay in Shanghai between the two week treatments because the children are too weak to travel to their home village and need to be near the hospital for emergency issues. The families primary concern are the daunting costs towards the leukemia treament for their child. But, a good clean, well ventilated housing environment is essential to reduce infection risks and ultimately to their survival. Each family who receives housing aid will sign a contract with Mercy Fund/JGI-Shanghai understanding the rules of this temporary housing provided.
